Pharmacogenetic Testing
Pharmacogenomics is the study of how a person’s genes can affect how well medications work for them, including things like symptom improvement, common side effects, or rare allergic reactions. It can offer helpful insights for you and your doctor to create the best treatment plan for your needs.
A psychotropic pharmacogenomic test looks at genetic traits that can influence how your body processes a medication (how it's absorbed and broken down) and how the medication works in your system. This field is still growing in both medical and mental health care. Many tests are available through commercial labs or some larger health centers, but not all of them are equally reliable or helpful for making treatment decisions. To perform the test, a DNA sample is collected, usually through a blood draw, cheek swab, or saliva sample. The sample is sent to a lab for analysis, and a report is then shared with your provider and/or you.
Andrea is a registered clinician with a company called GeneSight and can order this oral saliva swab test that is sent to you at your home. Discuss with her why and if this test would help with your treatment plan. She does NOT benefit financially or professionally by being registered with the company.
